Just opened a few months back, Mum’s Seafood Noodle House offers food lovers home style cooked food. Tucked away in The Strand, Kota Damansara (a fairly new commercial development) finding this hidden gem isn’t so difficult since it has a rather famous nyonya restaurant (The Wok) neighbour located a few shoplots away.
Some of their dishes are pictured on the left of the wall at the top.
The dining area is spacious with high ceiling and furnished with simple furniture.
In line with the name of the restaurant, its only natural we start off with their signature Seafood Noodles Prawn Soup and Fish Head Noodles.
Mum’s Seafood Noodles Prawn Soup RM 13.80
The prawn soup base is very fragrant. It reminds me of Penang’s Hokkien Mee (KL’s equivalent name of Prawn Mee) of which I’m familiar with since I’m from Penang and coincidentally so is the chef. The types of seafood ingredients thrown into this soup dish consist of squid, grouper, mussel, bamboo shell and last but not least big prawns.
Mum’s Fish Head Beehon RM 7.80
*Note: There are different choices of noodles to pick = Mee, Beehon, Koay Teow and Yee Mee.
Mum’s Nyonya Garoupa Curry Fish Head – *Subject to Market Price*
Stir-fry Fish Head with Salted Egg Yolks RM 16.80
This particular dish, what to look out for is to eat the crispy fried skin of the fish head that is battered with salted egg yolks. It is a different thing compared to the earlier dish, the curry fish head whereby you would look to eat the meat(the cheeks especially) that in my opinion is the best portion of the fish.
Stir-fry Prawn with Golden Garlic RM 18.80 and curry leaves
Stuffed Squid with Prawn Meat RM 18.80
This dish is really worth mentioning. Huge squids stuffed with minced prawn meat and slowly braised in premium soya sauce. It was so tasty that we had to order second helpings. The squid was cooked just right so that it was chewy but yet not rubbery and the soya sauce was able to marinate into the prawn meat nicely and yet wasn’t salty.
Bamboo Shell with Soy Sauce RM 16.80
Mussel with Soy Sauce RM 16.80
Nyonya Chicken $12.80
The sauce of the dish is midly spicy and with the addition of kaffir lime leaves and spices gives off a very nice aroma.
Lorbak RM 8.80 (2 rolls)
The size of the lorbak (another very popular nyonya item in Penang) may be unsual to some as the diameter of it is at least twice of those that you would usually find in lorbak stalls in coffeshops. With just the right amount of lean meat(pork) and marinated in five spice, the taste of it when you bite into it is defintely tasty.
Jiu Hu Char RM 10.80
Another nyonya dish, the Jiu Hu Char (also known as Bang Kuang Char) is definitely one of my favorite Nyonya vegetable dish. Jiu Hu Char (in Hokkien dialect) literally translates to Cuttlefish Stir-Fry. The main ingredients in this dish are Bang Kuan, Carrots, Mushroom and Dried Cuttlefish. How to eat this dish? You can order a huge helping of rice or wrap it with lettuce and some sambal belacan.
Sambal Petai Prawns RM 15.80
And to wash it all down, a gulp of their refreshing drink will definitely help.
Iced Ribena Lemon & Iced Lemon Tea (RM 3.30 each)
Here is the chef herself. She has been cooking at a very young age and you can imagine the amount of experience she brings with her to the menu.
In summary, Mum’s Seafood Noodle House offers a fusion of nyonya dishes cooked with TLC (tender loving care). All the ingredients used to cook the noodle were fresh and succulent.
Thanks to Ken of Foodpoi for the invite for a food tasting session in which we were served with many delicious food.
